New Zealand born and raised in England, Sophie Oldfield trained at the renowned Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Leeds. She has experienced an all encompassing and diverse career, performing in productions worldwide. In 1999 Sophie was chosen to perform in ‘The Millennium Show’ at The Dome, London. During her training at the award winning Circus Space, her interest in aerial performance was begun. Sophie developed the discipline required for aerial performance, and a passion to perform its most eclectic styles. After the Dome show Sophie continued her interest in aerial and physical theatre, touring the UK as a founding member of The Generating Company. Further productions include ‘The Birds’ at The Royal National Theatre directed by Kathryn Hunter (Theatre de Complicite), and the Jerwood Award winning ‘Movements Towards a Symphony’. Her interest and enjoyment of different performance genres has led to various film, acting, and commercial roles, including performances for The Royal Opera, The Prince’s Trust, Honda, and The London Science Museum. In the autumn of 2003 Sophie embarked on a tour of North America with Cirque Du Soleil’s production of ‘Varekai’. She performed triple trapeze, with an international cast, in over twenty US cities. The experience of Cirque instilled both performance endurance and a proven capacity for creative flair in the limelight of the world’s greatest circus. With the future in mind, Sophie completed the Cirque tour in 2006. Since then she has continued her fusion of ballet and contemporary dance, whilst exploring the limits of aerial performance. Sophie is also pursuing a career in Pilates - teaching its potential benefits to people from all walks of life and for physical performers. She intends to develop the skills necessary, to advise on physical health, for those whose bodies are their livelihood. |
